A "firestorm" of sorts is breweing in Port Washington Wisc. which is a community about an hour north of Racine.
What is the controversy all about?
As part of the "National Day of Silence" which trys to spread tolerance on "non-heterosexual people" (ie Homosexuals) two teachers allowed some students to pass around and then discuss a survey-questionare about "sexual orientation".
One of the many questions was "If you have never slept with someone of your same gender, then how do you know you wouldn't prefer it?"
About 400 of the 900 students in two social studies classes were asked to partake in the survery which was spnonsored by NY based "Gay-Lesbian-Straight Education Network".
Now some parents and school leaders are angry and some of the parents are calling for the teachers involved to be dicsiplined, one parent saying that it comes down to a form of "sexual harrasement" of the students.
I have to disagree wholeheartedly with that!!
To promote tolerance of others and get the message across that being different than the "norm" is ok is important and I feel that things like this should be taught in the shcools.
I applaud the students and the teachers who organized this survey and the ensuing discussions.
Maybe the students of Port Washington will be a little more tolerant and understanding of their fellow students, even if they are a little different, because of this.
I think we should be taught that "Dick and Jane" could also be Dick and John"......as far as sexual orientations goes....and that there is nothing wrong with that. Gay kids are at such a disadvantage, esp. in shcool.
Maybe things like this will lessen teen suicides and depression, a good deal of them being caused because these kids who are attracted to their same sex, because they feel harrassed themselves and if anyone remembers being picked on in high school...it is not a fun thing to have happen.
Again, I applaud the people responsible for this questionare being handed out to the students.

A good Tuesday to all...
