A 21 year old homeless man was arrested on Wed. and has been charged with multiple (4) Subway Stabbings in NYC.
The stabbings occured in and around Midtown Manhatten in a 12 hours span, and according to the Associated Press story, a tourist from Texas and two tourists from Canada were attacked as well as a local person. The Texas tourist is in critical condition.
The authorities stressed that the Subway system is as safe as ever though.
Good thing....I remember riding the subways at all hours of the day and night when I was out there this last fall and I felt safe....but after hearing about this I got a gignatic case of the "willies" thinking how "unsafe" the world really is. The story tells of the one guy who was stabbed, saying the assailant was after his cell phone.
When I was out in NYC this last fall, there were times when I was standing on the subway platform with not only my cell phone in my hand, but my video camera around my neck and my laptop bag around my shoulder....my what a target I might have been!! I will have to be more careful the next time I am in a big city. When you come from a smaller city, I guess we tend not to think of ourselves as targets for local homeless people or criminals...but as this story shows, it does happen.
Just goes to show you that anything could happen at any time to any of us.
I pray that those people that were attacked, come through ok without too many physical or emotional scars.
