Saddam Hangs??

So the day has finally come..

The 21st Century's most evil Villian (so some say-others would say it is our current president) has been executed.

Saddam Hussein was greedy...
He was also lustful...
He lied.....
He plundered...
And he killed....
(Most of us share 4 of 5 of those qualities at one time or another in our lives...)

His death will reverberate around the world and hopefully though not be enough cause for an all out "Holy War" or "Armegedden" as some are saying it could be the harbringer of.

I personally think that Saddam was a "puppet", a "scapegoat" of sorts if you will....to start something in the middle east that has been planned for a very long time. He was the "match that lit the fire" that will not burn itself out for a long time to come I fear.

This is just the start of something much bigger than "almost" everyone realises.

God Help Us All....

Happy New Year
(Oh wait...I will save that for later....)

Merry Christmas

The above photo seemed appropriate since we have no snow and the temps are more akin to what one would feel in Florida on the beaches rather than Denver in the mountains...

I just wanted to take the opportunity to offer each and every person who comes across the "John's Crazy World" blog a "Merry Christmas".

I hope everyone has a joyous holiday and gets to spend time with their loved ones...And for those that still believe in Santa Clause...I hope all of your wishes are granted and all your dreams come true.

I know most of my dreams and wishes have or are coming true this season.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a Good Night!!

Happy Holidays

It has been a while since I have posted anything on my blog....as such I have probably lost a few regular readers...I am sorry for that but I have been very busy the past few months and my level of being busy just wont seem to stop (but that can be a good thing I guess also) and I continue to chug ahead full speed with all the different things that are happening in my little corner of the world.

My two jobs have been taking up alot of my time as well as spending as much time possible with good friends and family over the last few months.

Racine sure is an interesting place to live and for anyone who says it isn't then they are not looking in the right places.

So what has the last few months brought for me?

I have been busy with helping some friends who have a Bed and Breakfast here in Racine and have learned alot about that segment of the lodging industry....so much that I hope to get a business plan together in the next year or so and possibly open my own (that right now is still a dream but as they say...dreams can come true...one just has to wish hard enough!!) or in the least, maybe go in with some friends to get another one going here in Racine.
The wonderful home that has been a part of my life can be seen by going to: www.racinebedandbreakfast.com
(Sorry..for some reasons the hyperlinks are not working right now with my blogger application so you will have to cut and paste it in to your browser.)

We had an early winter snow storm that dumped about 10 inches of snow on Racine and it proved to be a intense winter blizzard and pretty much shut down the city that weekend.

I have been spending time with close friends trying to have a little "holiday cheer" and...for the 1st year ever, I have all of my xmas shopping done BEFORE Xmas eve!!!

I hope everyone in the world has a very merry christmas and a very happy start to 2007.

A New Day in Government???

WEll folks it looks as if there is a major shift going on in national, state and local politics after this grounbreaking election here in the United States.
This is a GOOD thing for the most part though we have a lot of work to do to put our country back together after all the missteps and stupid moves by the republican led government of the last four years.

Though a few of the races turned out to be in favor of the republicans, the democrats swept away quite a few spots...some very important.

Here in my neck of the woods, our Governer (Jim Doyle) was reelected...which I think is a good thing and a few other local races had outcomes that I am happy with.
There are a few republicans that I voted for (I am not a die hard democrat.....more of a centrist if you will) and one in particular, Paul Ryan got reelected. He ate in my restaurant last night which was very cool. A very nice guy.

Lets see if the demorcrats can clean up the mess that they now have in front of them...

Working invisibility cloak created at last

So we are coming one step closer to the invisible "cloaking device" as envisioned in the Star Trek TV series and movies.
Though we are not quite there yet....as to make a whole spaceship dissapear....the technology is starting to mature to the point where hopefully some day in my future....the realm of what is now currently science fiction will become science fact.

Oh wait...I think they have made this device work already.
At least for my money.....you see it keeps dissapearing!

Burst of Wind-Driven Flames Engulfed Firefighters in California

To loose one's life is saddening.

It is even more so when four souls perish at one time and esp. in a raging inferno as did these four brave firefighters.
Just imagine their jobs on a day to day basis.
Not knowing if they will be coming home to their loved ones at the end of the day.

I grieve for all of them and their familie's.

Vote NO on November 7th-Please!!

I do not normally beg friends and family for favors but this one has consequences for me personally.

As it comes time this November 7th to go to the polls to vote for your local and state government representitives, there will also on that day be a section on the ballet talking about a constitutional amendment to outlow "gay marraige". The wording may be misleading on what they are asking you to do but the reasoning behind the choice being on the ballet IS NOT a simple yes or no vote.

You see....some legislators in their "infinite wisdom" (not) wish to preclude same sex couples, unmarried couples and other alternative families from having the same benifits (insurance, mortage rights, childrearing rights, the right to visist their loved ones in a hospital ICU and a plathora of other things) that these people right now are NOT entitled to but with time and temperence they may be able to enjoy.

If this amendment is passed on November 7th, people with "signifigant others" with whom they share their lives with will NEVER get the chance at having these things.

So if anyone has friends or family that are in the above situations (and look closely because you all probably do) then I implore you to vote NO in passing this amendment.

New Jersey is taking a 21st century step forward by trying to allow benifits to domestic partners and that is the way that alot of people (myself included) would like to see happen in Wisconsin and across the country as a whole.
If this amendment in Wisconsin is passed there will not be a chance for us ever to enjoy what we should be entitled to as human beings.

Justy because some of us do not take the "traditional" way of doing things, does not mean we should be punished. And that is exactly what this amendment will do. It will punish me.
And I do NOT deserve to be punished. I just want to be sure that if something would happen to my signifigant other , I would be able to visit him in the hospital without going through massive red tape, I could make the determination as to weather surgery is needed for him and god forbid he would die, I would still be able to share in what we may have built together as partners both financially and physically.

Read on for the decision that was brought down in New Jersy and think hard and heavy before heading to the polls on November 7th. For those of you reading this in other states or in other countries, it is time you all think of these things also. Granted the decision in New Jersy still has to work it's way through the various hurdles in order to become law but with a governer who supports these initiatives, it will probably stand a good chance at passing....

We are living in the 21st century and we have come so far in alot of aspects but as of yet, as far as it relates to people's rights, we seem to be moving backwards to the point of being in "1600 America" if not before.

Thank you all for your time and have a good day.

The Gov visits my city and gives a development project some money...

Just found out from a friend that Doyle was just in town to "bequeath" $750,000 to the city and or the developers of the "Pointe Blue Development Site" down on the lakefront to help clean up the brownfield that is now down there.

That is probably the coolest thing that could happen for these guys down there. The money was given at a small meeting late this morning at the mayor's offfice by the Gov. himself.

Gary had been keeping it very hush hush and though I knew the Gov. was going to be in town, my friend nor I had any idea as to why he was coming for a visit, only that he would be here to see the mayor today.

This development will surly help move the city of Racine into a new and exciting era. Just imagine all the revenues and the tax base that this addition to our city on the lake will bring. And a truly cosmopolatin feel to the lake front (which is already happening with the pathway and the new scenic overlook over by the zoo).

I run and bike that pathway quite often and I took some pictures of the length of it a few weeks ago and when I set the photos to a slide show and to some music on my laptop I started crying while watching it...that is how awesome the whole lakefront looked.
I will try to post some of those pictures in a post coming up for all to see.

I feel we are truly shaping up to be a "true bedroom community". And that is what the current city planners are moving towards. Sleep and live here and possibly (most likely) working not in the city proper but close by via a nice commute. A lot of communities have been succesful in this kind of endevor...I hope we will be as well.

I am truly excited for our little "jewel on the lake" or as some might say "our diamond in the rough".

updated 10/25/06 12;41AM:
It seems the journal times ran an article on this and there has been a lot of feedback in the blogs...some positive as my post is and quite a bit of negativity from what seems to be some very angry depressed "republicans" that are mad that Doyle seems to be doing something good (again) for our state. Another World War Warning!

Things are brewing pretty hard across the world in North Korea and I think the time may be sooner than later where some jerk is going to start a series of events into motion that could send us all back to the stone age.

I sure hope not but from all the different stories I am reading, it seems we are on the cusp of something that may have very far reaching effects for everyone that calls this "3rd rock from the sun" home.....

I for one will continue to live each day to the fullest and to make sure I am prepared for things as they may happen.
I am not a negative person in thoughts...but this stuff with North Korea has me on edge....alot!

I sure hope diplomatic efforts prevail in this latest "brewing" world crisis.
It behooves us all to try to ensure the survival of our civilization lest it self implode in the next little bit because of all of the morons who rule our world.

God help us all.....

Read on for the latest on this brewing conflict where North Korea has issued a statement calling the U.N. sanctions against it, a "Decleration of War". Those are fighting words if I have ever heard them.

A prelude to another 911??

I just finished reading an interesting blog post from another blogger, where he puts out the theory that all that is going on over in Northeast Asia (North Korea) with the nuclear tests and all that this could possibly be a harbringer of another "planned event" to coincide with the election cycle coming up in the USA.

Though there has not been an attack on the scale of 911 since that fateful day, the play currently acting itself out on the other side of the world sure makes for an interesting introduction for a very big "page turner" in the making.

Read on for the whole post:

http://themindseye.wordpress.com/2006/10/18/dprk-a-requiem/

For those that do not have the time or the will to read the entire post, I have copied the paragraph which brings it all together as to what I am referencing with this blog post:
__________________________________________________________________________

While I am not one for conspiracy theories, I will be very interested in watching the run up to the next U.S. elections.

I feel almost certain that there will be another ‘terrorist linked’ attack of 9/11 proportions around that time. It is the ‘half-truth’ used by a fascist dictator in order to confirm that aura of fear they have been pushing for so long and in the process securing their formerly waning position in power.

There have been no attacks in the U.S. since 9/11 and this is despite the apparent threat warnings from the Bush administration. This could of course be suggestive that their ‘methods’ are working at keeping the people safe… or perhaps that the current ’script’ does not call for ‘fireworks’ at this moment in time.

I am wondering what could be bigger that 9/11 and in that train of thought I am lead to consider the use of a nuclear attack upon U.S. soil.

Are the events presently unfolding in North East Asia merely serving as the prelude to a darker chapter still yet to be written?

Something to think about for sure......

300 Million-Wow!

The USA has officially hit the 300 million mark this morning in population!!

I do not quite know how that number was drawn upon on this day but if true, that is a heck of a lot of people inhabiting this nation.

For more on this story, click on the link below:

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/3/300_MILLION_MILESTONE?SITE=WIMIL&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT

So, if I were to take myself out of the picture so to speak, the current population would then be 299,999 million??
It wouldn't stay that way for long though according to the news ditty I just viewed on tv....it sems a new baby will be born in the next 30 seconds and shortly after that someone else will die....evening out the "score" so to speak.

I wonder what the population of the world right now is?
I am sure there is a website out there that will tell me.
Time to google.

Fall is in the Air...

It is one of the most wonderful times of the year right now here in South Eastern Wisconsin. As I wake up this morning, I can feel fall is really in the air.

Though it is cloudy and the air is full of rain coming, the colors of the trees are beginning to reach their full bloom and I think we are only a week or so away from full fall colors.
What a time to get out and walk by our great lake or take a brisk bike ride through our many scenic bike trails that meander through our city.

Also lots of things going on such as rides through pumpkin patches and if one takes a drive a bit west from Racine they will encounter roadside stands with pumpkins and squash and other fall veggies.

There is also a nice little diversion out on Hwy 83 just after Waterford that has hey bales in the shapes of pumpkins and spiders and there are so many pumpkins to choose from one would have to grab at least one...which I plan to do sometime this week. I myself plan on taking a nice fall drive this thursday and plan on taking my digital camera to capture some of the amazing "eye candy" that nature has seen fit to give us during this time of year.

There is also an exciting "Film Festival" coming to Racine this weekend.
"It came from Lake Michigan" is to be the midwest's premier film festival concentrating on the horror film genre and most of the films I have been told are created by independent filmmakers from throughout the country.

It is being held at Festival Hall this weekend starting on friday and going through sunday.
One of my close friends, Jason Collum, who has produced horror films and authored a book on B-Horror actors will be at this event as well as other "biggies" of the horror genre (see links below).

A link to this event: http://www.itcamefromlakemichigan.com/

A link to the special guests who will be in attendance: http://www.itcamefromlakemichigan.com/guests.html

And a link to Jason's site: http://www.jasonpaulcollum.com/

A sure bet for a nice weekend along with a walk or bike ride or drive to see some out wonderous trees changing their colors.

Also this weekend coming up will be the official dedication for the completion of the stairway and bike path that runs along the east side of the Racine Zoo.

More information on that can probably be found on the city of Racine's web site which is if I recall correctly: http://www.cityofracine.org/

And more specifically: http://www.cityofracine.org/media/pdf/Pathway_Opening.pdf
You will need the Abobe Acrobat Reader software to view this page, which can be downloaded from: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

I hope everyone has a nice autumn and finds some of the above links helpful in planning out their weekend coming up. I will try to post a few photos from my fall road trip once I have them captured for prosterity....

Cat starts fire and then Dog rescues owner...

Those darn cats!!

Below is a sampling of news from around Wisconsin.
The first little ditty is one that caught my eye being that I am a cat owner.
The cat knocked a candle onto a chair which started a fire and then the dog who had been trained by it's owner to do cool things....grabbed the phone for it's owner to call 911.

I wonder what the dog would have done if the cat had pissed all over the dog's favorite chew toy???

Happy monday to all.
Fall is in full bloom here in Southeastern Wisconsin and the weather is crisp and full of color (as are the trees).
It seems the cold that we had last week only lasted a few days and now we are in full fall mode with 40s and 50s and cloudy days and sunny days...today being one of those cloudy and rainy mondays such as the one Karen Carpenter sang about in her song "Rainy Days and Mondays".....but hey these days do not "Get me down"...
In fact I find mornings like these to be invigorating and I am getting ready to take a run and then get ready to begin my week.

Back from a summer respsite...well kind of`

Fall is here and with fall comes the leaves coming off the trees and crisp cool evenings and chilly mornings.
It is also time to take the AC units out of the windows and to change over the summer bed linens to the comfy winter ones such as the flannel sheets I just bought.

A time of cleanising and refreshing and time to get ready for the holiday season that is about to overtake us all.

And with this change of the seasons also comes kids being stupid and more kids (and some adults) being even more stupid....such as this 18 year old that hails from my city that I live in.

U.S. Government accused of blocking hurricane report

It seems that there is more to the "Global Warming" phenomenon that is being reported (or not being reported) by our government these days.

The strength and frequency of severe storms and hurricanes and all the other strange weather that has been happening in the last few years seems to corralate to some very interesting scientific data that the government scientists have uncovered in the last few years.

I think our government needs to be honest with its citizens and help us all prepare for what the world may be going through in the future.......and what is happening right now.

You all "Come on Back you Hear"...5 more days till Texas Vacation

So it has been a busy summer and fall is almost here.

What a way to start the fall season...it has been raining pretty much since labor day and my tan is fading fast.
Well...maybe I can get some color back this next week while I am in Texas.

Yes I am heading south for a much needed vacation this next monday morning.
A friend and I will be staying on the Gulf Coast starting in Houston and making our way down the gulf eventually getting to the southern most point in the U.S. and then we will take a jaunt across the boarder into Mexico!

I can not wait. A week of sun and sand and fun.

Not too much else to write about. The news as it has been happening has been rather non exciting though my personal summer has been good.
Now that the weather is starting to turn I will probably start blogging more and there is always the Bush bashing to keep on....so all in all life is good.

A Huricane named after Me!

How exciting...
The latest hurricane of the 2006 season is being named after me.
And...it is a categorgy Four storm already.

I am just reading about it now.

Huricane "John".....
It is heading up Mexico's pacific coast line and forecasters are predicting it could come closer to land as it makes it's way up said coast line.
According to the article below, the "eye" is not projected to hit land but with all storms...this one is just as unpredictable as other storms.

Stay tuned.

In other news closer to home, it seems a strange weather pattern took place yesterday over our Lake Michigan here in Racine.
Waterspouts developed over the lake early in the morning and though none of them came to shore, quite a few developed out in the lake. It is said these "mini tornadoes" over water, could potentialy come on to land as full fledges tornadoes.

Start a "Slug Line"....

This is also a very cool concept.
I do not know if it would work in Racine ( the driver would probably either be shot or the mayor might ask for a ride home after a night of drinking a bit too much) but it has possibilities all the same.

It is akin to "hitchhiking with permission" as far as I can see.
So if you are board on your way to work and the Sirrus Satalite Network has you flipping the channels for something to listen to on your drive in to the office.....you might want to get a "Slug Line" started in your little megatropolis.
They are doing it Washington D.C. so I am sure it could work almost anywhere...surly in Milwaukee or Madison which are in my "neck of the wooods".

Former President Bill Clinton to campaign for Doyle in Wisconsin-PLUS: Add to "The Journal Times of Racine" Bill Clinton top ten list

Remember this guy??

Former President Bill Clinton will be in Milwaukee in October and I hope to get a chance to see him.

Alot of people may think he was not one of our best presidents, but look at what he accomplished in his time in office and look at where the world was headed....it was a pretty good direction by all standards (read the comments posted by a reader after the article..the poster's name is Schuster and I have a comment with my post name of jrep also included) and a heck of alot better than the condition the world is in right now because of our current administration.

No man is perfect and he (Clinton) would be the first to admit it and yes he made some very bad mistakes and errors in judgement. But as my grandmother used to say....don't judge lest ye be judged.

I am formally requesting October 24, 2006 off from work. Maybe I will get the chance to see one of the greatest men that history has or will ever come across.

All Aboard....My city has a new Amtrak station

It took a few years to happen but Racine actually has a new Amtrak station that takes the place of an old ugly station that had been the embarking and drop off point for those who wanted to board the train in the area.

I never used that station, instead deciding to take the METRA into Chicago and embark on my trips to various locals through out the U.S. at Union Station in the Windy City.
But now that there is the new station just a few miles from where I work, I may just hop on the train here in Racine for my next trip.

I have yet to check out the new station but may take a drive down there tomorrow on my day off to see the new "digs".

A New way to stay SAFE on the Web

I just came across this little software application from McAfee which is known for it's security and antivirus applications.

It is called "Site Advisor" and it is from McAfee.
It is a free web browser extention that attaches to your browser bar and lets you know if a site you are visiting may be safe or not.
It sits unobtrusively in your browser on the top right side.

I am going to give it a spin and see how it works.
I will let everyone know.
But it is free and McAfee has proven to be a trustworthy and reliable source for other antinvirus and online security products in the past so I will give it a green light for now.

I Want my MYLO

This just found.
I want one...BAD!

Sony will be releasing it's latest gadget in a month. I hope to buy myself an early christmas present.

It is called MYLO which stands for MY Life Online.
It is a personal communication device something akin to a PDA and a PSP and IPOD all in one.

I have wireless built into my laptop and often take my computer with me when I travel and connect to the many different wireless networks that are availbable in all different areas such as Barns and Noble, the local coffee shops and even some of our local parks and downtown areas.

The unit will be available in Sept. and have a price around $300.00.
An expensive toy to be sure but one that will allow instant messaging, web browsing, music, picture viewing, videos and even the abiltity to use the skype network to talk via VIOP which stands for Voice Over IP which is a way to talk on a phone via the internet.

I can not wait for September.....

Liberty Crossing....The U.S. Nerve Center on Terrorism?

The plot to blow up airliners was foiled and men from Michigan were arrested trying to buy massive amounts of cell phones to resell to terrorists.....this is supossedly what the boys in "Liberty Crossing" have been able to figure out thus far in the fight against the terrorists.

The President says that though we are safer than we have ever been, we are STILL NOT SAFE and the fight must go on.
Of course the fight must go on.
MORE of our FREEDOMS will be removed I am sure, because of this latest "plot" and the scenarios outlined in the novel "1984" are becoming even more entrenched in our daily lives.

So what is next?
Well for one thing....did you know that if you are "Gellin" (have gel inserts in your shoes) you wont be gellin on any flights...that is right. You must take out your gel insole inserts before flying....
More and more flights being deverted, more people being taken off of airplanes for unruly behavior, more people being stopped at or in front of the White house for strange things.

This terrorist stuff is just getting too weird....I miss 2000 and before...

A Happy Wed. to all.....

Iraqi Insurgents Teaming up with Hezbollah??

I do not know about anyone else but the following scenario kind of worries me (and would really worry me even more if I were the president or any of his administration members that are trying to stem the tide of violence in the mideast.

It seems that two very violent and dangerous forces are gathering together to create a "shitstorm" like the world has not seen a very long time......someone needs to get control of this situation before it escalates into something far worse. (But I have a sinking feeling it is already too late).

A few paragaphs from the AP story and then a link to the rest of the story:
____________________________________________
Hundreds of thousands of Shiites chanting "Death to Israel" and "Death to America" marched through the streets of Baghdad's biggest Shiite district Friday in a show of support for Hezbollah militants battling Israeli troops in Lebanon.

No violence was reported during the rally in the Sadr City neighborhood. But at least 35 people were killed elsewhere in Iraq, many of them in a car bombing and gunbattle in the northern city of Mosul.

The demonstration was the biggest in the Middle East in support of Hezbollah since the Israeli army launched an offensive July 12 after a guerrilla raid on northern Israel. The protest was organized by radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, whose political movement built around the Mahdi Army militia has been modeled after Hezbollah.

Al-Sadr summoned followers from throughout the Shiite heartland of southern Iraq to converge on Baghdad for the rally but he did not attend.

Record Heat Bakes the U.S....Is this the Start of Global Warming??

Almost everyone who lives in the continental United States has felt the heat the last few weeks.
Deaths in California and across the nation have been attributed to the massive heat wave that has strung across pretty much the entire nation.

There have also been massive power outages as the electrical grid in big cities have been trying to deal with the increased demand of people trying to keep cool. New York has suffered some pretty severe ongoing outages as have other big cities such as St. Louis.
Thank god we here in South Eastern Wisconsin have not had any outages but we did have three or four days where the temps hovered around the 100 degree mark.

But this is August...
Isn't it supposed to be hot and sticky with temps in the high 90s and 100's??

When I was a kid I remember these hot spells with the heat and humidity being called "The Dog Days".
And we didn't have air conditioning. In fact I can't remember many in my neighborhood that did.
And we were fine in those days.
A lot of "koolaid" got us through the hot days and at night the fans went full blast.
And then there were the numerous trips to the local "Dairy Queen" and if we couldn't get there we would bike over to the local fast food hamburger joint called "Chips" and get a cold soda or an ice cream cone.
Our days were spent either at the local pools or if we were lucky we would get some parent or older brother of a friend to take us out to one of the two local lakes that were on either end of Wisconsin Rapids, which is the little city in central Wisconsin where I grew up.

I guess as we get older most of us forget those hot summer days of our past.
There probably were worse heat waves going back to the beginnings of the 1900s.
I am sure that the "Dust Bowl Days" of the 1940's were some pretty rough times for people.

I do think the planet is warming (as some scientists are saying that the earth goes through these warming phases quite often) a bit and maybe there is a bit of what some are calling global warming going on.
Do I think that this is the harbringer of things to come for our planet?
There is a possibility I would think but then again I think our Earth is pretty amazing planet and I do not think that the planet is going to roast us all to death in the near future.

I for one am enjoying my summer and I would just like to remind all of those people that are complaining about the heat now to remember this warmth when it is twenty five below zero come next winter....

I plan on spending a nice weekend enjoying the sun and the warmth and all that summer has to offer.

Warm Regards for a good weekend to all....

Saturn's moon a bit like Earth?

As reported in the article below, scientists are having their first in deapth peak at the topography of Titan, one of Saturn's moons.

And it seems that things are a bit like the Earth though the temps are about 200 degrees colder than ours and the stuff that makes up the atmosphere is pretty much considered "deadly" to us humans.

But all the same, it seems that there are ingredients that could harbor some sort of life..if not now maybe sometime in the past or possibly sometime in the future....

The Best Article to date about the Israeli-Hizbollah Conflict

A lot of people are having a hard time understanding why this war in the mid east is happening and why it is thought to get much more intense with no means of a cease fire or anything even remotely close to it.

The article below I feel gives a pretty good explanation of the reasons.
It is a long read but worth every word in my opinion.

The End of Man??

I just finished reading an article that was a real eye opener.
In it, the author talks about the Amazon Rain Forest and it's immenent death and what that will do to the earth and it's very fragile ecosystem.
And all of that could be happening in the very near future.

For our sake, I hope his predictions are wrong (as does he). But I also fear (as does he) that is might be too late and that in a matter of 10 years or less we (all humans) may just be living in a "living hell" and that alot of the population will die off as a result.
Maybe even our entire speicies will become exctinct.
I sure hope not.

I have included his missive in it's entirety below as I feel it is a very powerful statement and one worth reading....that is if one cares what one part of the earth can possibly do to the other.

In ending I say that as I always have....if we were to perish tomorrow because of a number of different things, I would be thankful for the life I have lived these past 40 years and I will be thankful for all the wonderful people I have met in that time and all the awsome things I have experienced.
I surly want this wonderful ride to continue so I can experience even more of this massive world I live in....but if I do succumb to death tomorrow I will know that I have tried living my life to the fullest while I was here.

And now to the article entitled "The End of Man?".....
____________________________________________________________________

As the summer of 2006 rages on, with heatwaves stretching from the American Pacific coast all the way across the North Atlantic to Europe and virtually around the world, we now discover that the great Amazonian rain forest has perhaps a year to live.
If there is no rain in the Amazon basin soon, and that forest is destroyed, mankind is likely to die with it. This is because the Amazonian forest is, in effect, the heart of the world's ecosystem. It is a vast, unimaginably important carbon dioxide sink and oxygen producer. Without it, the planet's climate will quickly become untenable for human life.
We are well on our way to another large-animal extinction, and we will be among the large animals who go.
Given the amazing magnitude of this catastrophe, I very much doubt that more than a remnant of mankind would still exist in 25 years. If it happens, most of us will be dead within 5 years, and those remaining at that time will curse God for not having taken them, also.
Unfortunately, it is not all that unlikely that this crucial ecosystem will die. It probably will, in fact. More terrifying, it is likely to die in the context of vast forest fires, that will come alight due to dry lightning and people used to relatively damp and non-combustible foliage accidentally setting fires.
So, what can we do about it? The short answer is nothing. It's too late. Overpopulation and political inaction will have done us in.
The next question, then, is how do we face it? My first thought is a simple enough one: we need to pray our hearts out for rain to fall in the Amazon between this coming December and next May. Because if it does not come, scientists from Woods Hole are warning that the forest ecosystem will completely collapse.
Climatological studies show conclusively that this will lead to profound drought across the whole of the northern hemisphere. Our world, as we know it now, will be in ruins by 2010, and something close to hell by 2012.
I know that it's almost impossible to imagine that it could be that bad, but, in fact, it's true. The life of the world depends on that rainy season working.
This gets to the reason that it has been so dry there for the past two years. It is because the Caribbean has overheated, and the hot water does not produce enough free vapor to form the moisture laden clouds that usually sweep across Brazil and push up against the Andes during that season.
Why has this happened? In great part, because the growth of human population has happened too fast for the environment to cope, and it's rebalancing itself by relieving itself of the burden that is us. In part, it's because we have not directed our intelligence or our scientific and engineering skills to solving the problem of global warming.
This has not been a matter for debate for twenty-five years, and yet lying politicans and greedy companies have kept the false debate going anyway. The United States, the one country with the power and the expertise to make changes has, instead, ended up with an exceptionally poor leadership that has promoted the shibboleth of denial until it is, in all probability, too late.
The largest question is, how do we engage in this process of dieback? How will it strike us first?
The first problem is one we already face: heat. There will come times soon, possibly in Europe in the next few weeks, in fact, where heat becomes untenable and thousands die. But that's only the beginning. There will be heatwaves, if the Amazon dies, that will kill millions.
The next problem will be water. We'll run out. The desert cities that have emerged in the US will experience catastrophic water emergencies and forced migrations that it will not be possible for the rest of the society to absorb.
Then will come the food problem. Already this year, excessive heat has disrupted production of food crops worldwide. The disruptions are not disastrous yet, and the world still grows a food surplus, but the day will come when that will not be true, and if the Amazon does indeed collapse next year, the first great food shortages will appear in 2010.
After that, social collapse will spread rapidly. The rest, you can imagine. There's no point in describing it.
In my 1985 book Nature's End, I predicted essentially the scenario that is unfolding now, and warned that the Amazonian rain forest might become too dry and burn.
The fires have not started yet, but they are not far off, I fear.
I understood very clearly in 1985 what runaway global warming would do to the planet--what it is doing now. I also saw that this catastrophe would not be recoverable for us.
Now, we are facing a stark reality indeed: the end of the Amazonian rain forest and the subsequent end of man. It is worth remembering that more than nine out of ten species that have ever existed on the earth are extinct at any given moment in geologic history.
Will we go entirely extinct? There is no way to be certain of that, but we will experience a massive dieback, that is certain...if the forest fails.
And for those of you who will scoff at this and say 'what does the Amazon have to do with us,' I suggest you look at the climate models. The peril is quite clear.
What will it be like to live in a dying world? We do now, actually, but nobody really admits it. However, when temperatures are still in the triple digits in Kansas in November, as they will be if we lose the Amazon, people will begin to face the reality that we waited too long to act, and have run out of time.
Who will they blame? What difference does it make?

I have been working since about 1980 to avoid ever having to write an article like this. Unfortunately, neither my little effort nor the much greater efforts of far more influential people, have helped change the situation.
The Kyoto Treaty turned out to be a lot of talk built around a dubious premise. The United States has not shown any leadership at all in this area, at a time when the survival, if not of the species, then certainly of civilization, depended on bold and innovative action by the world's most powerful country.
So now we stand just this side of dying. We who live on this day may know the end of the world. There will be no rapture of the congenitally selfish, and the Moslems will not meet their sky virgins. What will happen will be hard, terrifying beyond words, and fatal in a million different ways, but always fatal.
How do we do a thing like this well, if it comes down to the dying? It's hard to imagine. But I will say this, that the peace that abides in my own heart will not be shaken even by this suffering.
I watched a little boy today, come down the street with his backpack on and his eyes twinkling with the joy of his boyhood. He walked on past me and I thought that we cannot count how much we owe our children.
If I could, I would lift them all into a better earth, but I have not the strength in my shoulders.
Now it's dark, the house is hot (we don't have air conditioning) and the hour is late and weary. Somewhere nearby, that little boy sleeps, and dreams perhaps of the peaks he will ascend in the future to which he feels entitled.
Now, the little baby who lives across the way cries and fusses a bit. Mother comes, I hear her voice, tired in the late hour, nevertheless cooing with the gentlest love.
Love. I don't see the world as a place of hate. I can hardly hear words spoken in hate. It's as if they're being shouted up from a deep well. I see the world as a land of love, because that's what it really is.
Subtract the politicians and the guns and the media, and think of your own life. You live in love. You love your children, your parents, your spouses--and you are multiplied by billions.
For uncountable eons, life on earth was governed by the brutalities of nature. Animals fought and slaughtered and died in abject terror here, for ages upon ages.
Then, just a short time ago, a man and a woman gazed into each other's eyes and spoke words of love, and the world changed. Now, in all this intricate vastness of billions, there is love. In fact, mankind is an ocean of love riding a little rock in the great dark of the sky.
An ocean of love. That's our reality. The guns and the wars and the hate, the betrayals and the cruelty--those are mere dimmings of the huge light of love that shines here.
A late hour, weary hour, and I am tired, too. I know well that this is the first place where this warning has actually been voiced. Hopefully, it will be proved wrong by circumstances, but I very much doubt that. Who is going to cool the Caribbean? The answer is, it's too late.
Even if the rains come this year and next year, there will soon be a series of years when they do not come.
On the plus side, the Amazon rain forest has been around for around two million years, and throughout that time has experienced significant climate fluctuations. Scientists consider it an extremely resistant ecosystem.
Earth, in other words, has a strong heart.
Have we broken it?
Pray.

A Pretty Good Viewpoint of the U.S. View on the Mid East...

The following article from Forbs.com says quite a bit in one little "nutshell" about what SEEMS to be the intentions of the U.S. as far as the latest round of diplomatic efforts concerning the fighting in Israel and Lebanon and in trying to help Israel (and the world for that matter) create longterm stability in that part of the world.

That is all I will say for now...

Secret Pentagon Plan to Attack Mideast revealed...

I came across this the other day that may shed some light on what is currently going on over in the mideast.

General Wesley Clark, who has been talked about as being a potential presidential contender a few times in the past year, supossedly had a "chat" with some other pentagon officials back on 2001.

An excerpt from the article and a quote from Clark, and a link to the article below the quote:

"As I went back through the Pentagon in November 2001, one of the senior military staff officers had time for a chat. Yes, we were still on track for going against Iraq, he said. But there was more. This was being discussed as part of a five-year campaign plan, he said, and there were a total of seven countries, beginning with Iraq, then Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Iran, Somalia and Sudan.

Our Minds controlling our PC's

The Matrix and Neuromancer are coming closer to reality.
At least according to this article.

Imagine being able to control all you do with your computer by thought alone. Eliminating the need for the mouse, keyboard and even your voice.

While the implications of such technology are immense in a positive sense such as the point being made about the "quadriplegic" man in the article below, there are also various things about all this that frankly scare me. Imagine if someone devises a way for "two way thought interpetation" and or the ability to create subliminal thought processes coursing through our minds (oh wait...the movie industry supossedly does this already by way of subliminal milisecond advertising in between the many lines of moving pictures....or so I have heard) to make us do things and in the case of our dreams.....I wont even venture into that.

But still all in all it is all very interesting and totally amazing as to where we are headed in the early 21st century.

Hezbollah Threatens "No Place Safe for Israelie's"

Someone once told me that the tounge can be sharper than the sword.

And if the statement above made by Hezbollah's representitive in Iran is any indication....then the escalating crisis in the mideast is just the beginning of a newly revived campaign of terror and death for the world at large.

It is being said that our U.S. Secretary of State is currently planning to travel to that part of the world to try and negotiate some sort of ceasefire possibly....I do not think she or anyone else will be able to do anything at this point and I feel that the crisis will only deepen in the days and months to come.

I pray for all the poor lives that are going to be lost because of this developing war. I just hope it doesn't escalate into what some are thinking could turn into the next true "World War".

The latest conflict in the Mid-East-Is this the start of World War Three??

What is going on with Israel and Lebanon?

As I was ending my work day on Wed., my bartender who was coming back from the front desk mentioned that the TV in the lobby had the news on and the newscaster was talking about the possibility that the conflict over in that part of the world could possibly develop into World War Three. She said they were talking about how the U.S. is completely backing Israel in it's offensive in trying to stop "Hezbollah", which is considered a terrorist organization by the U.S., from wreaking more "mayhem" over in the southern part of Lebanon and in Northern Israel.
The roots of this conflict goes very deep and very far back in recent history and the U.S. has been involved in trying to stop the "on again-off again" violence many times in the past 30 years.

The bombing that is currently going on between the two is affecting a lot of people and as I was talking with some of my staff at work yesterday, I mentioned the fact that so much of what is happening over there in the world has been talked about since the days of the bible and that some of the things seem to coincide with what the bible calls "The End Times" and "Armageddon"....the end of the world as we know it.

Well for the time being, the conflict over there is affecting quite a few people back here in Wisconsin and in Milwaukee in particular. The story below that I have linked to tells of a few people who must surly be going through pure terror right now in trying to get out of "harms way".

JS Online:Far-off conflict hits home for families

I for one will live each day to the fullest and share my love and affection and my positive nature with all of those that mean something to me. None of really knows when the end will come for our species but if the human population keeps this crap up I have no doubt it will be sooner than later.

I say "Live like there is no tomorrow...because there may not be one if things like this keep on going on".

But...if things do end unexpectedly, I will have to say at least for myself that it has been an interesting "ride"....

A good Friday to all.

Censorship of the Blogs....

It seems that India (which by the way is one of the biggest technology based countries in the world right now) is blocking access to a number of blogging websites including the one here that my blog is hosted on.

Why are they doing this?
To try and stop extremists from talking about their views after the deadly bombings in India a few weeks ago.

I really don't think this is the way to go about making sure the extremists have a way of communicatong with one another.
If all other countries had the same view of things, the internet might as well be shut down. One of the great things about the web and the net is for people to have the ability to practice their freedoms.....the ones that we have left that is.

Israel and Lebanon at the Crusp of Full Scal War?

The middle east seems to be heating up again.
This time things are getting so "hot" that the "going ons" over there make it seem imminent (at least to me) that these two nations are in the initial stages of a full scale war.

The holy land doesn't seem very holy these days.
I feel sorry for all the innocent people who will be killed if this stuff goes beyond what has happened in the last few days.

I wanted to always visit that area of the middle east...but I think I may wait until their civilizations are eventually rebuilt after all the destruction and carnage that is taking place right now runs it's course.

New York Times Article on my Home Town

A friend told me that the city of Racine had gotten a nice little write up in the New York Times Newspaper a few weeks ago.

I was interested to see what the Times had to say about our little city on the lake.

I have been busy with work and all this last week so I didnt get a chance to dig very much but as I was checking out a few different local blogs this morning, I came across a post from "Realdebate" that was kind of rude to say the least while talking about the Times write up (which I have included here in it's entirety) and then by digging in to the Times site on the 1st of July, I found the slideshow which I have also linked to below.

For the record, I think the mayor and the officials of this city are doing a fine job and that while Racine may have it's problems, there is a lot of good going on here.

There may be a full article somewhere on the Times site and if I find it I will post it, but I did find a nicely put together slide show that the Times did. Photos with captions....very well done.

Click on the link below to view the piece that the Times put together:
Business and Financial News - New York Times:
"Slide Show: A Community Coming to Grips With Change
The story of Racine, Wis., like that of the nation as a whole, is also the story of how a community comes to grips with the larger forces of globalization and technological change."

And "Realdebate's post about the story:

Racine is going to be featured in the New York Times

This Sunday a smiling Mayor Gary Becker will be on the front of the business section of the New York Times.

The story is keyed on how Racine is adapting to the economy.
Seeing as unemployment is horrid and there is zero new industry in town, I'm really confused as to what exactly they are going to talk about, unless of course they talk about interpersonal relationships between city officials.
More likely Gary will blame unemployment issues on Paul Ryan while taking no personal responsibility himself. It should be an interesting read.
I wonder if there is a classified story they could leak out of Racine?

I was an "Extra" in a B-Horror Movie Flick tonight...

A close friend called me this evening and asked if I wanted to be part of a cast of "extras" making up a crowd in a bar during part of the filming of a "B-movie" called "October Moon 2-November Son", that his friend just started filming in Racine.

I of course said yes. So we traveled to a bar just south of Racine and took part in what is to be the sequel to a movie that this friend of a friend is filming.

It was a blast. We danced to some cool techno music and we sat at a lounge table enjoying "fake" conversation while watching some dialouge being filmed at the bar.
I do not know if either of us got on film but we did have to sign a "release form" which all extras do. I look forward to buying this movie when it eventually comes out on DVD for sure.

What a way to spend a monday evening.
I am going to have to go out and rent the 1st movie which is called "October Moon" and is available on DVD through various outlets here and there.

Wisconsin Explorers reach North Pole

What an adventure this must have been for these two guys. An expedition to the North Pole!

And the first adventures to make it to the pole in the summer time.

The reason for this trek?
To call attention to Global Warming and the fact that if things continue the way they are right now, all ice could be gone from the pole within the next 50 years...and thus the polar bears that call this area of the world home could be facing extinction.
This was the pair's second try, having started the same trek last year only to find grueling conditions that stopped their adventure back then....

What things they must have witnessed already.
According to the story below, they encountered one of those great beasts (the polar bear) already, along with numerous other cool sights.

Sadly the trek for these two is now over as the one part of the adventerous pair has hurt his back due to all the "sloshing" through the "very thin" ice pack in "Santa's homeland".

These guys should be proud of what they accomplished. They have just had an adventure that doesnt not happen to very many people in a million lifetimes much less one.
I applaud them for their courage and adventurous spirit.

Holy Strawberries Batman!!
George Bush has turned 60.

The "Babyboomer of babyboomers" is starting into his "twighlight years".
He spent a day of this last week in Chicago trying to bolster his sagging ratings in the polls.
During his visit he talked about the situation in N. Korea and how he feels that the communist country will answer for their little test of their "missiles" over their sea.
But he also took some time to visit a Chicago firehouse and they responded by giving him a birthday cake.

Milwaukee beaches go to the Gulls (and Baby Diapers)

I spent the entire day at the beach here in Racine just this last week.

It was a wonderful day with sun, sand and the nice calming sound of the lake. And it was clean and there were many people and there were lifeguards on duty and there were people grilling out in the distance up on the grassy hills above the beach.
There were also people playing "beach vollyball" and music coming from the "Oasis", which is a concession stand and beach house that sits in front of what people are saying is one of the nicest beach fronts in the midwest.....
Ahh, North Beach.
The pride of our little city here on one of the Great Lakes.

Ok, so go a few miles north of me here in Racine and the picture starts looking a little different. As far back as I can remember, I have heard of "Bradford Beach" in Milwaukee. The name conjured up images of tanning and swimming.

When I was a kid, I used to come down to Milwaukee in the summer to spend time with my mother's cousin (who seemed more like a very cool aunt) Anita and as part of my many childhood adventures, she would always take us down to the "Beach" for the day, among other things to keep us busy and make sure we were having fun.
My memories of buying a hot dog from the concession stand, seeing all the many people on the beach tanning and swimming and playing beach vollyball and just walking or running along the busy shoreline are memories that have stuck in my head and make me think of what a nice beach means....

But that is not the case for "Bradford Beach" (or any other in the Milwaukee area) these days. The beaches are full of garbage, the lifeguards are basicly non existent and the seagulls are so numerous that one may be afraid that Alfred Hithcock is in town doing a remake of "The Birds".

How sad that those once pristine beaches have taken such an awful turn for the worse. Hopefully the city of Milwaukee can do something before it is too late....

This would probably not

Even our Nation's Capital not immune from Strange Weather

I found this story to be interesting.
Heavy rains on the east coast are causing some problems in Washington D.C.

So much so that some federal buildings have been closed because of flooding and other problems. Some people in suburbs and areas close to the capital have been evacuated from their homes also according to the story below.

What a mess. Even "The National Archives" which stores some of our most valued historic documents was flooded. They say that the "Constitution and the Bill of Rights" are safe though.
(Editors note: Has anyone noticed that Bush pretty much has made those two documents dissapear already....)

With summer being here, I have not been blogging as much and will probably continue that trend through the next few months. So much to do outside when it is nice.

Everyone remembers Sept. 11, 2001.

The folks who are trying to create a memorial to the many souls that were lost that awful day are getting closer to realizing their dream for an everlasting memorial to those people and that day.
The director of this effort talks about her experience in this initial "inaugural" podcast (an audio broadcast over the internet).

Click on the link below to listen to Alice Greenwald's musings on some things relating to her efforts in getting this memorial up and running almost five years later.
Build the Memorial: podcast

I can only say that a project of this magnitude is important for our collective conscience the entire world over. So that what happened is never forgotten.

I for one am looking so forward to visiting this memorial when it is complete. I got to see the site when I was out in New York this last fall and it completely took my breath away.
(The photos above were taken by me when I was out there last November visiting the site. There is signage on some of the buildings next to the site talking about the memorial and plans for it's contstruction. I also took some video but still have to reformat the video to allow it to be shown on a computer. I will hopefully be doing that soon.)

The sheer magnitude of what happened on that day has still not fully sunk in for millions of people and even after personally visiting the site myself, I still do not think that I can comprehend all that happened on that day in September of 2001 that forever changed our world.

A good Tuesday to all.

A Good Sunday to all.

World's 2nd Richest Person to give away all of his fortune...

...before he dies.

Warren Buffett (Sounds like a music artist) used to be, some say, the world's richest person until Bill Gates took over that position sometime in the 80s.

Now Mr. Buffett is set to give almost all of his money to the charitable foundation that the world's richest man owns...the "Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation".

Interesting choice of who to give one's money to.

The Babyboomers are turning 60....

So I still have about 20 years or so before I hit that magic number.

I was born into what is commonly called "Generation X" and escaped being a "Boomer" by a few years. I have things in common with both generations which I am happy for as I can relate to a lot of people both older and younger than me.

An interesting story below on the "Boomers" and what it means for some of them to be reaching that milestone of life that I once thought was "old" but now feel is sort of like the "prime of mid life".

100 Million People in close to 40 years in U.S. alone!

The world population has increased by leaps and bounds in the last thousand years alone, going from about 23 Million people in the year 1000 and then decreasing drasticly in the 1400's as a result of the "Black Death" of the middle ages and then rebounding to it's current level of about 1.5 Bilion people.

That is alot of humans inhabiting our planet. Let's go to my "neck of the woods" for a spell and see how we are contributing to this never ending growth.

The U.S. Population has increased by 100 Million people in a little under 40 years according to this article.

Imagine that that there will be 300 Million people in the United States alone by the fall of this year.
The year I was born (1966) there were about 200 Million people inhabiting our country.
So in essence, I have learned to share my country with close to 100 Million other new souls in the time I have been alive.

An interesting footnote here is that, according to the story below, Census officials feel that that baby that brings us to the 300 Million number will be.....you guessed it....Hispanic.

Interesting story on the U.S. population growth below. Read on for more:

JS Online: News

My question here is how much longer can our planet sustain this type of growth. According to some articles I have been reading the last few months, not long at this rate. Eventually our infastructure will start to decay and need to be rebuilt and there is only so much viable space for this growth. Though Mega Cities are sprouting up all over the globe and it is not uncommon to have cities with populations int he many millions, there is only so much land on which to grow food, which is the mainstay of our growth.

The world sure is getting a bit cramped isn't it??

Government: A Fake Debate in Congress??

I decided to watch a little bit of C-Span on tv the other night and I caught the debate on the "Iraq War" going on between the various politicians.

I have to agree with the following article below where the "jist" of the story says that this debate was a gigantic sham.
From what I heard on C-Span and from what I have read below I feel we are heading in the wrong direction and that if only the democrats would force the administration's hand a little more, we would maybe have a chance at ending this "huge drain on our recources here at home".

Perspective: Democracy or demagoguery?

PS: I probably wont be posting as many articles this week as I am on vacation.
Stay tuned for more of "John's Crazy World" in the next week or so.

Warm Regards for a good week to all.

Another Step to the Police State

I read about this in the local newspaper today before reading CNN's account of the latest decsicion by our Supreme Court to further disregard our personal rights.

Our loss of privacy is happening so fast it is hard to realize where one right is lost and the next one is being taken away....

I was listening to "Coast to Coast", an AM radio talk show that talks about many things, late last night and one of the guest's on the program was talking about how the U.S. has become so much of a "police state" that it pales in comparison to what Hitler was doing in Nazi Germany before and during WW Two.
He talked about the fact that the U.S. constitution is quickly being completely eroded and the Bill of Rights will soon no longer exist in any way, shape, or form that the founders of our "once great nation" envisioned.

After reading the article below, I have to agree.
Is there a way to take the Supreme Court back to a more balanced and centered court? I hope so, but I doubt it. I think the "puritins" have a major foothold now and I would guess that we as citizens just need to get used to the fact that we are indeed living in the "Biggest Gulag" in the world....Amerika.

Right now I have to admit that with all that is going on I am truly ashamed to be an american, mainly because of our inept leaders and their decsicions that are going to end up bringing consequences far dire than they can imagine.
In the eyes of others in the world, we are starting to be considered the next "Socialist Society" with no individual rights, or very few that matter.

The I-Pod Killer

Microsoft is at it again.
They have been in the news a lot this last week.
First with Bill making his announcement that he is planning on giving up his day to day responsibilities at his company and now
the latest rumor out of Redmond Washington suggests that Bill is gettng ready to unleash a music-video player on the world. A player that according to some insiders who have seen prototypes, is much better then Apple's Ipod and offers much more usuability to the "average joe".

I will finally break down and buy one of these if Microsoft comes out with it. I hope it is soon.

On another front, my DVD of the Windows Beta version of Vista (the next operating system from MS) arrived on my doorstep today.
I am on vacation this next week and will hopefully get some time to play with it a bit.

Happy Vacation....

This Scares Me!! North Korea and Missiles

North Korea is in the news again and this time it seems the little communist nation in SE Asia is trying to rattle King George's monarchy more then ever.

An ICBM from a not so friendly nation capable of reaching U.S. territory and some even say most of the continental United States.
That doesnt sound too good....

Health News - First official death from chronic fatigue syndrome

Many people complain of having this condition known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
It affects their life in such ways that they can not go about their day to day activities with any sense of normalcy.
They are always tired, it hurts to lift things and do all sorts of other things that most of us take for granted in our day to day lives.

And now a woman in England has died and for the first time ever, her cause of death is being listed as mainly from this condition.
Many doctors do not even believe that this condition really even exists and that it is "mostly in the mind"....likening it to depression of sorts.

The article below trys to shed some light on this condition and what it did to one poor soul...

The "Smith's" go to Racine

I just posted in another local blog about the disclosure of Racine's former mayor's wife that she admitted to being involved with the call that came in to the Racine Chief of Police's home the night that Gary Becker (our current mayor) was being looked for by the local Racine police dept.

I wrote earlier last week in that blog that I felt the Smith's had something to with this whole incident and sure enough...I was right.

Click below to read the post and the one after that which is the original posting I made last week:

I am so proud of the local political scene here in Racine (Not!!) and if anyone even dares to say that the entire thing wasnt political in nature...then they are one sandwich short of a picnic basket.

News: NYC Subway Multiple Stabbings!

A 21 year old homeless man was arrested on Wed. and has been charged with multiple (4) Subway Stabbings in NYC.

The stabbings occured in and around Midtown Manhatten in a 12 hours span, and according to the Associated Press story, a tourist from Texas and two tourists from Canada were attacked as well as a local person. The Texas tourist is in critical condition.

The authorities stressed that the Subway system is as safe as ever though.
Good thing....I remember riding the subways at all hours of the day and night when I was out there this last fall and I felt safe....but after hearing about this I got a gignatic case of the "willies" thinking how "unsafe" the world really is. The story tells of the one guy who was stabbed, saying the assailant was after his cell phone.

When I was out in NYC this last fall, there were times when I was standing on the subway platform with not only my cell phone in my hand, but my video camera around my neck and my laptop bag around my shoulder....my what a target I might have been!! I will have to be more careful the next time I am in a big city. When you come from a smaller city, I guess we tend not to think of ourselves as targets for local homeless people or criminals...but as this story shows, it does happen.
Just goes to show you that anything could happen at any time to any of us.

I pray that those people that were attacked, come through ok without too many physical or emotional scars.

Remember Screech? The bell may not save him this time

His name is Dustin Diamond.

He was a childhood star back in the 90s along with two other guys I can't even remember.

But the sitcom was on for many years and though it was kind of corny at times, I do remember getting a few laughs out of it every now and again.

"Saved by the Bell" is now in syndication but the royalties that Dustin recieves from the rebrodcast of the show can't help him keep his house in Port Washington, Wisconsin (about 45 miles north of where I live).

So he has decided to try his "celebrity status" as a former child star and use his "name recognition" and is hawking t-shirts on Howard Stern's radio show as well as a website he has created, which you can reach at:
www.getdshirts.com

Read on for the full story from the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel Online Edition:
JS Online:The bell may not save him this time

I will probably buy one of his t-shirts. For $15.00 it will be a nice conversation piece...plus maybe I can help a former child star keep his home.
I hope he has good luck in his endevor...
(It is amazing what the hollywood stuff does to kids!!)

Country Radio Stations Refusing to Play a Song....

...because it is politically incorrect.

The song is by a famous Country music group that is on the "charts" all the time, yet they now only sing this "tune" at concerts when requested by audiences. Too bad. It is a very sad and pretty melody that has to do with God and the state of our nation.

Tick off your neighbours...if you dont like them that is!

Have you ever had a next door neighbour you just cant stand?

Try this next time your bushes need to be trimmed, or better yet grow one specificly for them.

Or it could just be fun for a laugh or a conversation piece!!

Colloquialisms from the 16th Century

I am sure that most have heard of some of these old "phrases" and some may even know their meanings and or where they came from.

I thought it would be fun to reprint them though as I just saw them on another site. Enjoy.....

In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase "goodnight, sleep tight."

It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called the honey month or what we know today as the honeymoon.

In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts. So in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them mind their own pints and quarts and settle down. It's where we get the phrase "mind your P's and Q's."

Many years ago in England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the rim or handle of their ceramic cups. When they needed a refill, they used the whistle to get some service. "Wet your whistle" is the phrase inspired by this practice.

In Scotland, a new game was invented. It was entitled Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden.... and thus the word GOLF entered into the English language.

Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May and were still smelling pretty good by June. However, they were starting to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the b.o. Baths equaled a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water."

Houses had thatched roofs. Thick straw, piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the pets. . . dogs, cats and other small animals, mice, rats, bugs, lived in the roof. When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying, "It's raining cats and dogs."

There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could really mess up your nice clean bed. So, they found if they made beds with big posts and hung a sheet over the top, it addressed that problem. Hence those beautiful big 4 poster beds with canopies.

The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt, hence the saying "dirt poor." The wealthy had slate floors which would get slippery in the winter when wet. So they spread thresh on the floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on they kept adding more thresh until when you opened the door it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed at the entry way, hence a "thresh hold."

They cooked in the kitchen in a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They mostly ate vegetables and didn't get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes the stew had food in it that had been in there for a month. Hence the rhyme: " peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old."

Sometimes they could obtain pork and would feel really special when that happened. When company came over, they would bring out some bacon and hang it to show it off. It was a sign of wealth and that a man "could really bring home the bacon." They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and "chew the fat."

Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with a high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food. This happened most often with tomatoes, so they stopped eating tomatoes . . . for 400 years.

Most people didn't have pewter plates, but had trenchers -- a piece of wood with the middle scooped out like a bowl. Trenchers were never washed and a lot of times worms got into the wood. After eating off wormy trenchers, they would get "trench mouth."

Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or the "upper crust."

Lead cups were used to drink ale or whiskey. The combination would sometimes knock them out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a "wake."

England is old and small and they started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take their bones to a house and re-use the grave. In reopening these coffins, one out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they thought they would tie a string on their wrist and lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night to listen for the bell. Hence on the "graveyard shift" they would know that someone was "saved by the bell" or he was a "dead ringer."
