The executive chef of my hotel- restaurant kitchen, is in the hospital and had surgery friday afternoon at 1215pm.
According to what I have been told...he has been having serious migranes for the past few weeks and on Thursday, they were so bad that he had another associate take him to the ER at St. Marys.
The Doctors did some tests (MRI I would think) and discovered a humongous (cancerous I hear) tumor inside of his brain (the size of a small fist another manager said) and determined that it was growing at an accelerated rate and pushing up against a bunch of nerves in his brain ,thus causing the headaches.
The tumor, or what they could get at, is now in the hands of patholagists and they wont know too much more until 7-10 days out. I hear he is now resting in ICU and only time will tell as to his recovery.
A few of the other managers have mentioned that even with the surgery, the ultimate outlook is not the greatest for him.
Funny thing is that I just saw him a few days ago (tues) on my first day back and I was talking to him about my train trip and he seemed just fine...in fact he asked me to bring the Amtrak train menu I had stolen from the Zephyr to show him.
So everyone is now saying a prayer (or two ) for him and hoping for the best.
Life is just too weird...and on top of that I heard earlier today that my uncle who suffered a stroke last week (very young...50 something) is not expected to hang on much longer, and then recently, another of my managers found out his mom has lung cancer. So, a bunch of us are dealing with terrible stuff and it seems there is a lot of gloom hanging over a lot of people's lives. As they say...eikurumba.....
.......On a happier note....I looked at all my pictures from my train trip vacation today and ended up capturing a lot of nice memories of wonderful scenery and photos of some of the many new friends I met on the various different trains...plus I got an email from a special pair of folks I met while on the Zephyr back home...that was kind of cool.
I also am in the process of transposing my travel journal from the trip to my blog and if you still click on over to it once in a while, hopefully in the next week I will have a trip overview with some of the pics on there.
I am also starting to plan my next trip for hopefully later this summer. I was thinking of taking another train trip...the "Empire Builder" out west to Washington and Oregon and Northern California..spending a few days with some friends who live out there (who happen to be visiting here in Racine right now) and then back on the California Zephyr again. Just need to save up a few dollars before then.
So...say a prayer for a friend, an uncle and a parent of a friend....Miracles do happen and maybe a lot of prayers will create a few miracles for a few people who really could use one.
Warm Regards for a pleasant weekend.
