Study: Life without the Net is unbearable

WASHINGTON -- Researchers investigating how people would react to not having access to the Internet had a tough time getting started. "It was incredibly difficult to recruit participants as people weren't willing to be without the Internet for two weeks," explained Wenda Harris Millard, chief sales officer of Yahoo, and a sponsor of the study.
All participants found living without the Net more difficult than expected, and in some cases impossible, the researchers reported. Nearly half of those in one of the surveys said they couldn't go without the Internet for more than two weeks. Sending e-mail, looking up phone numbers, getting directions for a trip, and checking sports scores online, have become a part of daily life.
Conifer Research worked with several dozen people who kept a diary of their activities. Regardless of age, income or ethnicity, all said they had withdrawal symptoms and a sense of loss, frustration and "discontentedness."
"The study is indicative of how the Internet has irrevocably changing the daily lives of consumers," Yahoo's Millard said

What if?
Unless you have been living under a rock (and alot of us have been, I am sure...with all the news about Iraq and the upcoming presidential elections taking up the airwaves-and the streets in the latter instance) you may have heard about the impending flyby of a pretty "Massive" astroid heading close to Earth on Wed September 29, 2004 (Tommorow in our world).
That astroid named "TOUTALIS" is supposed to come close enough to our planet to possibly even impact (the internet has been abuzz for months about this "mountian size planetoid" possibly dropping into one of our oceans and causing a massive tidal surge-think Deep Impact the movie or Armagedden the movie-that would surly cause massive loss of life on this planet) us, but most scientests feel that it will pass by without any cause for alarm.

I for one, am still planning on taking my vacation next week and planning for christmas and my 39th birthday in Feb of 2005.
But.....WHAT IF FORECASTS of imminent doom are, as techno-paranoids call them, "psy-ops"?
That is, psychological operations designed to redirect popular thinking in certain ways? What if we are being conditioned to live in fear of some world-ending super-menace—from outer space or wherever—that could be simulated and then seemingly averted at the last moment by a "miraculous" rescue? Whoever "saved" the world through such global stagecraft would acquire unprecedented influence. Dictators have risen to power and even claimed divinity for themselves using much more modest ruses.
Fantastic though such a scenario sounds, something like it probably could be done with technologies of the very near future, if not the present. One easily can imagine a tyrant(Bush anyone??) with worldwide ambitions and high-tech capabilities scheming even now to pull off the greatest hoax of all time, after years of conditioning the public to anticipate precisely such a crisis. This may sound like the ultimate techno-paranoid nightmare, yet it's consistent with the high volume of current warnings that the end is near. Quite a large number of people around the globe believe that the world is in its sunset years.
After 911, I remember my stepmother saying that she felt this was the beginning of the end. That was a scary thought coming from a pretty level headed person that I have known for a long time.
I also remember reading an article a few years ago about "psychological conditioning of the masses" through "Mass Media". The movies we watch being a major aspect of this.
Take the movies"Independence Day, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Alien movies, and the latest movie from Stephen King called Dreamcatcher".......are we being conditioned to "know and think" what the aliens look like, why they are coming and what can be done to survive such an event??
The article that I read, relates that because of this...when our goverment "claims to have initiated 1st contact with an alien intelligence" and then try to bring the population under a very strict "martial law" (Dept of HomeLand Security..hmmm) type of situation, we won't hesitate to follow their orders for fear of what may happen otherwise.
Hoaxes or not, on both the secular and religious levels, someone is successfully inciting fears about "the end" arriving very soon. Is it all the buildup to some contrived mega-fright?
Proof is lacking for the most part. Mike Moore's movie "Farenheit 911" gives some inkling to such notions and a few "non mainstream media sources" have mentioned different scenarios, but you won't hear or see any of this from the likes of CBS,NBC or CNN.
But, now so many people are screaming at once about a planetary upheaval within the next several years, that anyone can be persuaded that the world has only a few months left or that we will be "invaded" by a hostile species from outerspace.
Are we being Duped??? Dig a little, read a little and come to your own conclusion. We all must make up our own minds......mine says that something is ALREADY going on...but that that most of us will probably really never know....or at least not for a while......
(Remember how no one believed that the "Holocaust" never really happened.....that is until alot of people started talking, others started digging and getting information to the masses).
I for one...plan to keep digging and searching and learning all that I can.
As "Moulder from the XFiles tv show says......."The truth is out there".

Anyone Remember 1984??
No....not the year 1984 (or my friend Charlie's band 1984), though it was a great year....I graduated from High School in that wonderful year (yes I am dating myself now...).
I am talking about the book by George Orwell. The sypnosis of that great literary work was the "all seeing eyes of Big Brother-Our Goverment" and their intrusion into the privacy of our daily lifes.
Well, just tonight, as I was looking at things on the web, I came across two different stories that make me think that this concept is indeed becoming reality (alibit a little later than Orwell envisioned) and you know what?? It scares me. The story that I have included does mention that this city (which is an hour south of me) doesnt intend to peek into the privacy of our homes, but with the ability to "zoom in 400 times normal", you dont think that it will be possible to gaze right through our mini blinds and into our living rooms...(Doug...dont walk out of the bathroom without your towel on!!!)

Chicago moving to 'smart' surveillance cameras

A highly advanced system of video surveillance that Chicago officials plan to install by 2006 will make people here some of the most closely observed in the world. Mayor Richard M. Daley says it will also make them much safer.
"Cameras are the equivalent of hundreds of sets of eyes," Daley said when he unveiled the new project this month. "They're the next best thing to having police officers stationed at every potential trouble spot."
Police specialists here can already monitor live footage from about 2,000 surveillance cameras around the city, so the addition of 250 cameras under the mayor's new plan is not a great jump. The way these cameras will be used, however, is an extraordinary technological leap.
Sophisticated new computer programs will immediately alert the police whenever anyone viewed by any of the cameras placed at buildings and other structures considered terrorist targets wanders aimlessly in circles, lingers outside a public building, pulls a car onto the shoulder of a highway, or leaves a package and walks away from it. Images of those people will be highlighted in color at the city's central monitoring station, allowing dispatchers to send police officers to the scene immediately.
Officials here designed the system after studying the video surveillance network in London, which became a world leader in this technology during the period when Irish terrorists were active. The Chicago officials also studied systems used in Las Vegas casinos, as well as those used by Army combat units. The system they have devised, they say, will be the most sophisticated in the United States and perhaps the world.
"What we're doing is a totally new concept," said Ron Huberman, executive director of the city's office of emergency management and communications. "This is a very innovative way to harness the power of cameras. It's going to take us to a whole new level."
Many cities have installed large numbers of surveillance cameras along streets and near important buildings, but as the number of these cameras has grown, it has become impossible to monitor all of them. The software that will be central to Chicago's surveillance system is designed to direct specialists to screens that show anything unusual happening.
Huberman, a 32-year-old former police officer who is also what one aide called a "techno geek," said this new system "should produce a significant decrease in crime, and from a homeland security standpoint it should be able to make our city safer."
When the system is in place, Huberman said, video images will be instantly available to dispatchers at the city's 911 emergency center, which receives about 18,000 calls each day. Dispatchers will be able to tilt or zoom the cameras, some of which magnify images up to 400 times, in order to watch suspicious people and follow them from one camera's range to another's.
A spokesman for the Illinois chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, Edwin C. Yohnka, said the new system was "really a huge expansion of the city's surveillance program."
Tracking employees using Nextel phones
"With the aggressive way these types of surveillance equipment are being marketed and implemented," Yohnka said, "it really does raise questions about what kind of society do we ultimately want, and how intrusive we want law enforcement officials to be in all of our lives."
The surveillance network will embrace cameras placed not only by the police department, but also by a variety of city agencies including the transit, housing and aviation authorities. Private companies that maintain their own surveillance of areas around their buildings will also be able to send their video feeds to the central control room that is being built at a fortified city building.
The 250 new cameras, along with the new system that dispatchers will use to monitor them, are to be in place by the spring of 2006. A $5.1 million federal grant will be used to pay for the cameras, and the city will add $3.5 million to pay for the computer network that will connect them.
This project is a central part of Chicago's response to the threat of terrorism, as well as an effort to reduce the city's crime rate. It also subjects people here to extraordinary levels of surveillance. Anyone walking in public is liable to be almost constantly watched.
"The value we gain in public safety far outweighs any perception by the community that this is Big Brother who's watching," Huberman said. "The feedback we're getting is that people welcome this. It makes them feel safer."
One community organizer who works in a high-crime neighborhood, Ernest R. Jenkins, chairman of the West Side Association for Community Action, said the 2,000 cameras now in place had reduced crime and were "having an impact, no if's, and's or but's about it." Nonetheless, Jenkins said, some people in Chicago believed the city was trying to "infiltrate people's privacy in the name of terrorist attacks."
"I just personally think that it's an invasion of people's privacy," Jenkins said of the new video surveillance project. "A large increase in the utilization of these cameras would oversaturate the market."
City officials counter that the cameras will monitor only public spaces. Rather than curb the system's future expansion, they have raised the possibility of placing cameras in commuter and rapid transit cars and on the city's street-sweeping vehicles.
"We're not inside your home or your business," Mayor Daley said. "The city owns the sidewalks. We own the streets and we own the alleys."

I joined the campaign to reelect Bush????
You see....I decided to join the campaign to reelect Bush in hopes that I could learn more about (and taunt) those who want to reelect this "monster" for another four years. I have been getting emails from the campaign for a few weeks.....I finally had to respond to one of the emails as time is getting short.

Since you have signed up to be a member of our e-Campaign team and have chosen to stay involved and stay informed, you're well on your way to making the difference in this election.
Would you like to take the next step? Here are four things that will put us over the top in November and they all involve votes and voters - the most important part of any election.
1. Make sure you are registered to vote. In Wisconsin, just 3 1/2 weeks remain before voter registration by mail closes. Are you registered? Be sure. All projections indicate this election will be a close race decided by a small margin. Your vote could make the difference. Take a moment, to complete or update your voter registration at www.GeorgeWBush.com/Vote. It only takes a moment.

It is ALCOA and the Mellons who gave us fluoride, a poison and mind suppressant, in public drinking water.Shrub's vice-president, Dick Cheney, was his father's Defence Secretary and together they launched the "NATO" (British-American) war on Iraq in 1991. 1. Make sure you are registered to vote. In Wisconsin, just 3 1/2 weeks remain before voter registration by mail closes. Are you registered? Be sure. All projections indicate this election will be a close race decided by a small margin. Your vote could make the difference. Take a moment, to complete or update your voter registration at www.GeorgeWBush.com/Vote. It only takes a moment.
2. Make sure your family members are registered to vote. If you have a small family, use the form at the bottom of this page to e-mail this note and encourage them to register. Have a bigger family? Need more space? You can access or create your own Virtual Precinct and send a message to family members across the country encouraging them to register or update their information. Once they register, you can use the same tool to send them updates from the campaign and directions to their polling place.
3. Think creatively about other people who may not be registered. Do you have a Christmas card list? Or sing in a church choir? Are you a member of a Veterans group? What about the other parents on your child's soccer team? Have you touched base with your old friends from school lately? Odds are a lot of those people aren't registered to vote, but they may support the President. In the words of the phone company, "reach out and touch someone." I received an email from one of my friends yesterday in response to my blog. I wanted to spread the "gospel" so to speak, in reference to some of the things I have learned in the past few years....by reading "alternative media"...the media NOT controlled by our world goverments.

The Head Alien Visiting Racine???
It seems that the "alien" in charge of our goverment is making a stop in my city today.

I have known about this for quite some time, as his advance team has been staying at the hotel for a week or so...getting ready for the event.
I am sincerely hoping that he does NOT get another Four years as the head of our goverment. It will only give him Four MORE years to instill his (and other's) vision of the "ONE WORLD ORDER..aka...NEW WORLD ORDER....which he has already begun.

Another hurricane heading towords Florida?? Geez...how much more can those people take? I would have snapped ages ago. Maybe it is the OJ that is keeping them all strong??

Good morning,
What a wonderful week. The sun is up, the coffee is on, Scrappy is up and around and so is her master.
It looks to be a very nice day ahead. Would be nicer if I had offf but that, I do not know yet.......
It seems that the supervisor who I HAD to work for yesterday (and thus missed visiting with my aunts and uncles) who I was so looking forword to seeing, has not gotten back to me yet to let me know if he is going to work for ME today. So I may only have one day off this week (Tommorow) and I tell you...I really need that other day...esp after this weekend. Have you ever heard the word "POSTAL"??
That is what I feel I will become very shortly, if I do not get a break from work. So....if you see any "Repinski's" in the local news...it will probably be me...having gone crazy and on a shooting rampage.
I can see the headlines:
"MARRIOTT MANAGER SNAPS AND TURNS LOUNGE SUPERVISOR INTO UNEXPECTED SPECIAL OF THE DAY"
What else. Yesterday was Doris' daughter birthday...and I also missed her BBQ which Doris (My only ray of light) had invited me to but which of course I missed too. They were over at her sister Diane's who is also like a part of an extended family to me..and who I was also looking forword to seeing. Hmmm.
I have requested this saturday coming up off, to traverse up to the Brown "Homestead" for my neice's birthday party...but have yet to hear back if I will be allowed to go...work again. It depends on the ability to have our lounge staffed this weekend. We are suffering a serious shortage of bartenders right now. (Makes a good reason for self service alchohol) We will see.
If I do end up coming up, it wil probably be in a "snazzy Grand Am or a Camaro" as Millie (Doris' Daughter) will be borrowing my truck to move. (Yes...Doris' youngest is "flying" out of the nest and finding her own place...What a milestone...and to think that she was just a little kid snuggled in the backseat of her monther's car, sleeping and waiting for her mom to get done with work at Annie's on Layton in Milwaukee, when I first met her. My..how time flies. And of course I can not refuse Doris (or her Daughters) anything.....so my pride and joy (my little green truck) will be loaned out to a loved one.
I am trying to make the weekend in Nekoosa a possibilty and I will know more towords the middle of the week.
Hope everyone has a good couple days, and hopefully there will be more posts soon......(If I do not check myself into the local loony bin first!!)
